Safe Zone Virginia
University of Richmond Chapter
The name of this organization shall be the University of
Richmond Chapter of Safe Zone Virginia (hereafter referred to as "the Chapter").
It shall be located at the University of Richmond, Virginia.
Article II: Purpose.
The purpose of the Chapter is to reduce homophobia and
heterosexism on our campus and thereby to make our campus a safer and freer
environment for all members of our community regardless of sexual orientation.
In pursuit of that purpose, the Chapter will identify and train individual
faculty and staff members to serve as resources for members of the campus
community in the process of thinking through and becoming more knowledgeable
regarding diversity of sexual orientation, will inform the campus community of
the availability of those trained individuals, and will organize and sponsor
educational programs for campus community groups.
Article III: Membership.
1. Description: This organization shall be open to all University of Richmond faculty, staff, and students who share a commitment to the purpose stated in Article III.
2. Training: All those desiring membership shall attend a designated training workshop and read training material provided as a prerequisite for admittance to membership.
3. Responsibilities: Members must display a Safe Zone sticker on their office doors, bulletin boards, or wherever appropriate in their workspace. Members must be willing to discuss issues of sexual diversity with members of the campus community under appropriate circumstances and in appropriate settings. Members must take a basically positive attitude toward sexual diversity and must be supportive of campus community members' efforts to understand and appreciate sexual diversity. Members must do what they can to promote the safety and acceptance of all members of the campus community regardless of sexual orientation, to facilitate the integration of people of diverse sexualities into the campus community as a whole, and to reduce homophobia and heterosexism on our campus, in our city and state, and in our society.
4. Termination and Revocation: Members may terminate
their affiliation at any time by removing the Safe Zone sticker and informing
the Secretary/Historian of their desire to disaffiliate. Previous disaffiliation
shall not prejudice a person's request to re-affiliate at any time. The
Executive Board may revoke the membership of any person for failure to meet the
responsibilities described in subsection 3 above.
Article IV: Administration.
1. Administrative Body: The Chapter shall be administered by an Executive Board composed of officers and ex officio and at large members as described in subsection 2 below. Decisions other than decisions to amend these bylaws shall be made by majority vote of an assembled quorum or, if by mail ballot, a majority vote of the entire Executive Board.
2. Duties of Executive Board Members:
a. Chair - the Chair shall convene and preside over Executive Board meetings and shall oversee mail balloting.3. Elections: Executive Board Officers shall be elected by a plurality of the membership. Once per year the Executive Board shall submit a roster of nominations to the membership. Elections shall be conducted by mail ballot.b. Secretary/Historian - the Secretary/Historian shall keep minutes of Executive Board meetings, shall keep an updated membership list, and shall keep a file of information related to the Chapter.
c. Treasurer - the Treasurer shall administer the budget and dispensable funds under the direction of the Executive Board and shall preside over Executive Board meetings in the absence of the Chair.
d. News Group Monitor(s) - the News Group Monitor(s) (the number to be designated by the Executive Board and changed as needed) shall monitor the on-line news group and suggest news group modifications to the Executive Board as needed.
e. Student Members - two Student Members shall represent the student body.
f. Ex Officio Member - Westhampton College shall have a designated Ex Officio Member who shall serve as liaison to the Westhampton College Dean's Office.
g. At Large Members - the Executive Board shall have the power to establish at large positions as it deems necessary.
4. Terms: A regular term of service shall be three years.
5. Vacancies: Vacancies occurring between elections shall be filled by the Executive Board.
6. Removal: The Executive Board may remove a member from an office if that person becomes unable or unwilling to fulfill his or her duties. Removal from office does not constitute removal from the Chapter.
7. Committees: The Executive Board may establish or
abolish standing committees and ad hoc committees as needed for special projects
at its discretion. Committee members need not be members of the Executive Board.
Article V: Meetings.
The Executive Board shall meet at least once per regular
semester and as needed at the discretion of the Chair. Meetings of the
membership are not required but may be called at the discretion of the Executive
Board.
Article VI: Amendments.
These bylaws may be amended by a two-thirds majority of
the Executive Board.
Article VII: Affiliations.
1. The Chapter shall exist as an affiliate of
Safe Zone Virginia.
2. The Chapter shall maintain affiliation with the University of Richmond's
Chapter of the Lambda Coalition.
