HISTORY OF
IMPERIAL RUSSIA, 1689-1905
David Brandenberger

This course considers the span of the history of the Russian empire from the reign of Peter the Great to the first Russian revolution in 1905. It is the logical continuation of the preceding course on Muscovite history and anticipates the third of the series concerning the Russian revolutions of 1917. That said, the introduction to this course is broad enough to accommodate students who have little familiarity with the pre-Petrine era. Arranged according to the principle of chronological progression, the materials included in this survey are incredibly diverse. Diplomatic and dynastic history is flanked by social and cultural concerns. Underlying structures and trends are likewise elucidated.
