Women in Science
The 2008-2009 academic year is the
inaugural year of the
Women in Science
(WIS) themed community for first-year
women. Students involved in the program reside together in a section of
Lora Robins Court, a residence hall housing all first-year women, and
explore a shared interest in various disciplines such as biochemistry
and molecular biology, chemistry, biology, physics, environmental
studies or even pre-med.
Benefits of Participation
Participation in the WIS community enables
residents to connect academic interests to their residence hall experience
by taking an active role in their education both inside and outside of the
classroom. Activities and events are purposefully designed to assist and
support involved residents in broadening their knowledge of science. Peer
study groups, skill enhancement sessions, and faculty relationships are
just a few of the many opportunities offered in the WIS community.
A Resident Advisor specifically selected
to work with the community, as well as a faculty member from the sciences
directly connected with the program, work closely with students.
Professional staff members are also involved in overseeing the community
and promoting the holistic development and success of students.
According to the National Study of Living
Learning Programs, participants in living-learning programs are
significantly more likely than non-participants to transition smoothly to
college and obtain higher academic achievement.
Standing Strong Together
Nationally, female college students are
underrepresented in the sciences. At the University of Richmond,
Westhampton students prove an exception to this rule: with the support of
faculty and the dean’s office, female students excel in the sciences.
Women in Science
provides a foundation of peers to
strengthen further this support.
