Individual Advising in Time Management, Study Skills, and Stress Management

Take charge of your academic career! Free individual advising sessions are available in time management, study skills (i.e., test-taking, information processing, note-taking, concentration, etc.), or stress management.

For students wishing to assess their skills, consider taking the on-line Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI). This survey will provide a chart of your learning, study practices, and attitudes in categories such as time management, information processing, test strategies, selecting main ideas, etc.

To access this document, take the following steps:

  • Contact the Academic Skills Center on 8626 or e-mail hwalton@richmond.edu and ask for the school number, user name and password.
  • Go to http://www.hhpubco.com/LASSI
  • Enter the school number, user name, and password, and carefully follow the instructions. The inventory will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.
  • Upon your completion of the survey, a two-page report will give your scores in each category.
  • Please print the report.
  • Schedule an appointment to meet with Ms. Walton, at the Academic Skills Center in the Administrative Wing of Boatwright Library to discuss your results and strategies that can facilitate your areas of difficulty. Bring your report with you to the appointment.
  • Ms. Walton can be contacted at 804/289-8626 or email her at hwalton@richmond.edu

TIME MANAGEMENT

Managing your time is such a critical support strategy in the learning process, particularly for college students. Because many high school students are so used to parents, teachers and others providing structure to their lives, they oftentimes do not make that smooth transition into a university setting in which it is now up to them to structure their time. To get on that road to success, college students must learn quickly how to manage their time effectively and efficiently.

The Academic Skills Center can provide assistance in creating a time schedule along with important strategies for managing your time. It is important, however, to schedule an appointment early in the semester. In the meantime, take advantage of these pages.
