Suggestions for Assessing Learning
Data collection techniques commonly used to assess learning
include knowledge tests, written assignments, simulations, role
plays and projects. Below are some suggestions and examples illustrating
the suggestions.
2. Knowledge tests:
Based on the discussion in class, compare the consequences
of social events where alcohol is not used to events where alcohol
is heavily used.
3. Writing assignments:
"The student will write a paper on Alcohol using sources
for information that have not been included as part of the class
readings."
"The student will write a paper on the economic impact
of the abuse of alcohol in the United States that includes sources
not included in the class readings, as well as those that have
been included as part of the class readings."
"The student will write a one page paper that summarizes
an article having to do with Alcohol Abuse that appears in a
current (past month) magazine or journal."
4. Simulations and role plays:
In courses where simulations and role plays are frequently
used, the following might be the basis for assessment. Observation
will be the major technique for doing an assessment in these
formats. The observation can frequently be facilitated with the
use of a checklist of anticipated reactions and responses.
"In a simulated situation, the student will react and
respond to the situation based upon the alcohol abuse information
presented and discussed in the course." (Situations could
include what to do when on a date with someone who is getting
drunk or what to do when a good friend starts to use cocaine.)
"In a role play situation, the student will demonstrate
his/her ability to apply what he/she knows about alcohol abuse
regardless of the role that is assumed." (Situations could
include trying to talk to someone out of driving a car when they
are intoxicated or discussing your abuse problem with a parent.)
5. Projects:
"The student will design a poster that demonstrates his/her
knowledge of alcohol abuse that can placed on a bulletin board."
"The student will develop a lesson plan that demonstrates
his/her knowledge of alcohol abuse that can be taught to his/her
fellow students."
