Facing off on energy and the environment: Obama and McCain campaign advisers will meet at University of Richmond School of Law

September 23, 2008

Environmental policy advisers to presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain will discuss their candidate's proposals Oct. 1 at the University of Richmond School of Law. The 12:15 p.m. program will be held in the Moot Court Room and is free and open to the public.

Rebecca Jensen Tallent will represent the McCain campaign. Tallent is a legislative assistant for McCain's Senate office and a policy adviser for the McCain 2008 campaign, focusing on energy and natural resources. She holds a degree in political science from Carleton College.

Elgie Holstein, senior adviser on energy and environmental issues to the Obama campaign, will represent the Democratic side. He held several environmental and economic policy positions during the Clinton administration, including service as the U.S. Department of Energy’s chief of staff, associate director of the Office of Management and Budget for Natural Resources, Energy and Science, and special assistant to the president for economic policy at the National Economic Council.

Noah M. Sachs, assistant professor of law, will moderate. He serves as faculty director of the law school's Merhige Center for Environmental Studies.

The event is co-sponsored by the Jepson School of Leadership Studies.

The interactive session will begin with opening remarks from each campaign, followed by questions from the audience.

"As we head toward the election, many voters want to take a close look at the candidate's positions on energy and environmental issues," said Sachs.  "With this event, we'll hear from the campaign's top experts. The voters will decide who comes out on top."
