Edward L. Ayers, University of Richmond president and historian of the South, to speak on Lincoln presidency in Jepson Leadership Forum lecture
September 16, 2008
How Abraham Lincoln handled an incredible learning curve as he juggled the challenges of a rebel army, a divided northern electorate and brutal public opinion will be the topic when Edward L. Ayers, University of Richmond president and historian of the American South, speaks in the 2008 Jepson Leadership Series Oct. 7.
Ayers' lecture is the second of eight events in this year's series, which addresses Lincoln's legacy of leadership. It is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the University of Richmond's Modlin Center for the Arts.
Ayers has written or edited 10 books. His "The Promise of the New South: Life after Reconstruction" was a finalist for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, and "In the Presence of Mine Enemies: Civil War in the Heart of America" won a Bancroft Prize for distinguished writing in American history.
Ayers also created "The Valley of the Shadow: Two Communities in the American Civil War," an award-winning Web site detailing life in two American communities, one Northern and one Southern, from events leading up to the Civil War through Reconstruction.
