University of Richmond Student First Recipient of New Leadership Scholarship
September 27, 2005
University of Richmond sophomore Andrea Willis was selected by Voices for Women to be the first recipient of the Emily Couric Scholarship. Willis is a graduate of Henrico High School.
The scholarship covers the cost to attend the College Leaders Program at the University of Virginia's Sorenson Institute for Political Leadership. The program is an intensive, month-long program that teaches undergraduates about Virginia government, politics and public policy.
State Senator Emily Couric was a rising star in Virginia politics. Poised to run for lieutenant governor in 2001, she succumbed to pancreatic cancer. During her six years in the State Senate, she was a tireless advocate for Virginia's children and families.
"The confidence that Voices for Women has given to me is overwhelming and encouraging," Willis said. "I can only aspire to fulfill the dream of the selection committee and most importantly, Emily Couric."
Voices for Women educates and encourages women across Virginia to get more involved in the political process. The organization assists Democratic candidates across the Commonwealth who favorably support issues that matter most to women.
