Civil War Expert Comes to University of Richmond Library to Lecture About Uncommon Soldiers

The great-grandson of a Confederate soldier will come to Boatwright Memorial Library at the University of Richmond Oct. 9 to speak about the Civil War.

James I. Robertson Jr.’s lecture, “Johnny Reb and Billy Yank: Uncommon Soldiers,” will start at 2:30 p.m. in the Alice Haynes Room of the Tyler Haynes Commons. The speech is free and open to the public.

Robertson is the recipient of every major award given in the field of Civil War history. He is Alumni Distinguished Professor in History at Virginia Tech, where his Civil War Era class is the largest of its kind in the nation.

Robertson has authored award-winning books such as “General A.P. Hill,” “Soldiers Blue and Gray” and “Civil War! America Becomes One Nation.” Movie rights have been sold for his latest book, “Stonewall Jackson: The Man, The Soldier, The Legend,” which was a main selection of two major book clubs and has won eight national awards.

Robertson appears regularly in Civil War programs on cable and public television, and he also does a weekly broadcast carried by 11 public radio stations.
