University of Richmond, VCU to Host Festival on Chinese Film and Culture

September 27, 2005

The University of Richmond, along with Virginia Commonwealth University, will be home to a festival dedicated exclusively to Chinese film and culture.

Scheduled from Oct. 5-9, 2005, the China-America Festival of Film and Culture will offer most events free of charge. For information, visit the festival website at www.theROSEgroup.org.

The festival will feature films and cultural events that provide a unique opportunity for American audiences to become acquainted with today’s China. VCU and Richmond will host many of the festival’s lectures, discussions and films.

“As the United States and China begin to come together, it is vitally important that we do all we can to foster understanding and goodwill between our two nations,” festival creator and director Rose Nan-Ping Chen said. “The mission of the festival is to offer Central Virginia audiences a chance to experience China and its culture in an interactive, participatory manner and to expand their understanding of this ancient civilization now in a stage of major renewal.”

The Rose Group for Cross-Cultural Understanding, a nonprofit, grass roots entity, sponsors the festival with support from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and the Virginia Film Office. In addition to the scheduled events, the Rose Group is sponsoring the Mandarin Oratory Competition and a photography contest titled “Beyond the Great Wall: Snapshots from China.”
