In My Backyard Awards to be Given by University of Richmond Chaplaincy on Sept. 9

September 2, 2004

The University of Richmond Chaplaincy has selected nine recipients of its annual In My Backyard Award grants, totaling $10,000. IMBY grants help fund new and existing efforts that contribute to a "vision of community for the city of Richmond," said Camisha Jones, community service coordinator in the chaplaincy office.

IMBY grants were the idea of a task force, Service Associates, coordinated by the chaplaincy that represents various sectors of the Richmond nonprofit community. Representatives of area nonprofit organizations help select IMBY grant recipients.

The following organizations will receive grants at a dinner Sept. 9 in their honor:

  • Byrd Park Civic League, for a beautification program to replace damaged trees in the Byrd Park neighborhood
  • Church Hill Association, for a neighborhood watch block captain program, a crime prevention program that will recruit and train block captains
  • City of Refuge, for an after-school and summer youth development program that provides activities and tutoring to Highland Park youth
  • Richmond Midnight Basketball League, for "No Workshop...No Jumpshot," a program that pairs life skills workshops with basketball
  • Engage, a project that will use theater to empower disenfranchised citizens to be involved in the political process
  • Refugee and Immigration Services, for two resource centers for immigrants in apartment communities
  • Richmond Coalition for a Living Wage, for a project that will encourage low-wage workers to register to vote and get involved in the political process
  • Virginia Muslim Coalition for Public Affairs, for an awareness program to prevent domestic violence in the Muslim community
  • Women in Transition, for a program offering mentoring and training to women in crisis.
