Marathon Reading of Orwell's "1984" Scheduled for Oct. 3 at University of Richmond
September 20, 2004
Faculty, students and the public will conduct a marathon public reading of George Orwell's novel "1984" at the University of Richmond Oct. 3.
Volunteers will read 15-, 30- and 60-minute segments aloud 11 a.m.-9
p.m. in Weinstein Hall's Brown-Alley Room, where coffee and light refreshments
will be served throughout.
Dubbed "Sunday with Big Brother," the event will be held in
conjunction with the National Council of Teachers of English. NCTE is
sponsoring nationwide public readings and discussions of the novel during
October.
"The goal is to encourage Americans to talk about the book's prophetic nature and what it might teach us about life in the contemporary United States," said Lee Carleton, a Richmond English instructor. "NCTE hopes to inspire awareness and debate of the key roles of language in politics and culture."
