University of Richmond to Sponsor Annual Women In The Know Conference
September 5, 2002
Journalist and social commentator Barbara Ehrenreich will give the keynote address at the University of Richmond's second annual "Women in the Know: The Power of Knowledge in Our Lives" conference Nov. 8. The conference will run from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Jepson Alumni Center.
Ehrenreich will discuss her book, "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America," which tells the story of a year she spent working at various minimum-wage jobs across the country in order to investigate the physical and psychological stresses faced by America's working poor.
Conference participants will choose two mini-courses from among the following topics: gender and war, women and sexuality, women and television, and women and Islam.
"Women in the Know builds on the university's dedication to putting theory and knowledge into practice in the community," explained Janelle Perron Jennings, interim assistant dean of Westhampton College. "The conference will remind participants about the joy of learning and the strength and power of knowledge in their personal and professional lives."
The conference is open to all women at a cost of $75, including lunch. A reduced rate of $35 is available to University of Richmond graduates of the last five years. For more information, contact Faye Ladd at 804-289-8578 or fladd@richmond.edu. Deadline for registration is Oct. 21.
