University of Richmond Ranked Number One Master's Level University in the South

September 6, 2001

The University of Richmond is ranked number one in its category for the eighth straight year by U.S. News World Report's annual "America's Best Colleges Issue."

Richmond topped the "Universities-Master's-South" category by a wide margin, as it has since 1994. The Universities-Master's-South category includes schools that focus primarily on undergraduate and master's-level programs rather than doctoral.

The magazine measures colleges and universities in seven categories: academic reputation, retention of students, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving. The magazine also says it uses measures that show "how well the institution does its job of educating students."

Richmond also tied for fourth "Best Value" in its category. In a section called "Great Schools at Great Prices," the magazine ranks schools based on a formula that relates the school's academic quality with its average costs after financial aid. "The higher the quality of the school's academic program and the lower the cost to the student, the better the deal," the magazine says.

"We are pleased to be recognized again by an important college guide," President William E. Cooper said, "because it acknowledges the outstanding quality of our students, faculty and educational program."

The newsstand book "America's Best Colleges" and the Sept. 17 issue of U.S. News & World Report are slated to go on sale Sept.10.

Last month, Richmond was ranked no. 1 in the nation in "quality of student life" and third in "beautiful campuses" in the Princeton Review's "The Best 331 Colleges" guidebook.

Also last month, Richmond was named as one of the nation's "best buys" in "The Fiske Guide to the Colleges." Only 22 private institutions were named to that list.

Founded in 1830, the University of Richmond is a private, independent, liberal arts university located in the capital of Virginia. Its 2,950 undergraduates represent 47 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and 54 countries. An additional 1,300 students are enrolled in law, graduate schools of arts and sciences and business, and continuing studies.
