NPR'S "Performance Today" to Broadcast Shanghai Quartet Performance Recorded at Modlin Center

September 24, 2001

National Public Radio's "Performance Today" for Sept. 25 will feature a performance by The Shanghai Quartet, recorded at the University of Richmond's Modlin Center for the Arts.

The group's Sept. 13 performance of Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" will be broadcast during the first hour of the show.

"Performance Today" airs locally on NPR affiliate station WCVE (88.9 FM) from 9-11 a.m. and is carried at various times by other NPR stations around the country. Shanghai's performance was the first of 13 Modlin Center concerts scheduled to be taped for broadcast on "Performance Today."

The Shanghai Quartet is in its 11th year as artists-in-residence at the University of Richmond. Members perform regularly at the Modlin Center and instruct the university's top student musicians. The New York Times recently praised the Shanghai, saying, "If there is a string quartet currently in circulation that produces a more beautiful sound than the Shanghai Quartet, the name doesn't immediately come to mind."
