175th anniversary open house planned for April 2

IN BRIEF
  • President Cooper and others to discuss relationship between the University and city of Richmond
  • Children’s activities include clowns, balloons, face painting and a scavenger hunt

Lectures, walking tours and concerts will all be a part of the University’s 175th anniversary celebration April 2.

But so will such activities as a Contra dancing demonstration, massage therapy stations, trolley tours of campus, children’s story time and a scavenger hunt.

The day-long celebration, to which members of the community as well as faculty, staff, students and students are invited, begins with a 5K run at 9 a.m. to benefit Habitat for Humanity. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at First Market Stadium.

Dr. Bill Cooper, University president; Dr. Doug Hicks, director of the Center for Civic Engagement; and a panel of community leaders will address the relationship between the University and the city of Richmond at 11 a.m. in the Robins Pavilion of Jepson Alumni Center.

Dan Roberts, assistant professor of liberal arts and host of “A Moment in Time” on NPR, will discuss the history of the University at 11 a.m. in Jepson Hall, room 118, while Stuart Wheeler, associate professor of classical studies, presents a lecture on the architecture of the University at 9:30 a.m. in Weinstein Hall’s Brown-Alley Room.

Visitors can hear a number of lectures in the law school throughout the day, visit open houses in the human resources and international education offices, and listen to concerts by student groups in Cannon Memorial Chapel from 1–2 p.m.

Children will enjoy clowns, face painting and balloon animals, and every half-hour from 10 a.m.–1:30 p.m., they can participate in story time at Boatwright Memorial Library. Also at the library, guests can pick up work sheets for a scavenger hunt. Completed entries will be eligible for a prize drawing at 2:30 p.m.

The Joel and Lila Harnett Museum of Art, Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center and Lora Robins Gallery of Design from Nature will be open with special exhibits for viewing.
