International Film Series
Lawless Heart

(United Kingdom -- English)

The film is a carefully spun tale of lives of seemingly ordinary people who turn out to be infinitely interesting. The plot follows the lives of three men, while revealing that trivial background details in day-to-day life have greater meaning if we understand their context. The film won Best Screenplay at the British Independent Film Awards. Thursday and Sunday showings are at 7:30 p.m. in Jepson Hall, room 118. Friday showing is at 3 p.m. in Adams Auditorium of Boatwright Memorial Library.

Oct. 15
Violin/organ concert
8 p.m., Cannon Memorial Chapel
The Murray/Lohuis Duo

This performance will feature Richmond adjunct faculty member Robert Murray on violin and Ardyth Lohuis, professor emerita of music at VCU, on the University's Beckerath organ. Their program includes works by Albinoni, Vitali, Genzmer, Savori, Schroeder and Rheinberger.

Critics and top musicians across the country have lauded The Murray/Lohuis Duo for its artistry and exceptional ensemble. Frequently featured in concert at music festivals and musicians' conferences throughout the nation, the duo was spotlighted on "Performance Today."

Their CDs have been heard repeatedly on "Pipedreams," "Adventures in Good Music," "Audiophile Audition" and countless other "good music" programs throughout the country. Their recordings have earned critical accolades from numerous reviewers.

The duo has premiered several works by American composers and given the American premieres of works by Russian, Polish and East European composers. Inspired by the duo's artistry, four prominent composers have composed especially for them. Currently, the duo is celebrating its 21st year of performing. The performance is free and open to the public.

International Film Series
Broken Wings (K'Nafayim Shvurot)

(Israel -- Hebrew)

Set in the northern Israeli city of Haifi, the film could be a story of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Instead, writer-director Nir Bergman has created a scenario with universal appeal. The plot follows the life of a family that has lost a father and husband. It depicts their hardship--a situation that could take place anywhere in the world. Emotions run high, and the characters respond in unexpected ways to conflicts and frustrations. Thursday and Sunday showings are at 7:30 p.m. in Jepson Hall, room 118. Friday showing is at 3 p.m. in Adams Auditorium of Boatwright Memorial Library.
