Alcohol abuse prevention program wins national award

The University's wellness program, in collaboration with the Richmond College dean's office and other departments on campus, has won a national award for its alcohol abuse prevention program.

National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (NCAAW) presented Richmond a $5,000 prize for efforts to reduce alcohol abuse among students. Winners' programs are used as models by the Inter-Association Task Force on Alcohol and Other Substance Abuse Issues for other colleges and universities.

"It's a really high compliment to our university and our committed staff to be recognized by an outside group of experts who have compared our programs with those of other institutions and to be selected among the top three or four programs in the country," said Len Goldberg, vice president for student development.

Goldberg, along with Carol Johnson, director of wellness, and Dan Fabian, associate dean of Richmond College, traveled to Washington, D.C., for the award presentation Sept. 14 and also met with Virginia's senators and congressional representatives about alcohol abuse prevention.
