THE FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENT NEWSPAPER OF THE UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND NOVEMBER 2005

Cornerstone ceremony

Maddie, Marcus and Zach Jecklin, grandchildren of Marcus and Carole Weinstein, unveiled the cornerstone for the Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness, a $13.5 million facility under construction on campus. Marcus Weinstein, head of a family that already has donated $5 million toward the center, announced an additional $1.5 million in gifts toward the project during the ceremony Sept. 29. Speaking at the event, Weinstein delighted a crowd of around 300 students, faculty and staff by informing them he would give an additional $1 million, along with a gift of $500,000 from his business associate, Jay Weinberg. In recognition of the families' generous support of the University, the center's exterior courtyard and peristyle will be named in honor of the Weinstein grandchildren, and the interior courtyard will be named in honor of Weinberg's late wife Sondra E. Weinberg. Weinstein and wife Carole, both Richmond alumni, joined daughter and University trustee Allison Weinstein and son-in-law Ivan Jecklin in making the initial $5 million lead gift last March. The center is scheduled to open in January 2007.
