Stephen Bisese and Daniel Fabian co-authored an article on sophomore male retention in the March 2006 issue of Recruitment & Retention. It is based on programs to improve sophomore male retention at use at the University of Richmond.
Myra Daleng took 19 dancers to the American College Dance Festival Association at Montclair State University in Montclair, N.J. She submitted two pieces of choreography for adjudication: senior Jackie Knupp’s “Running Over” and professional New York choreographer Robert Battle’s “Battle Etude.” Both pieces received high praise by the panel of three adjudicators, and “Battle Etude” was chosen as one of 11 pieces out of 50 to be performed at the gala. It was “quite an honor and not only did we get to perform, but we were selected to close the performance, which is a place of honor,” noted Daleng.
Dee Hardy, director of food and auxiliary services, will be on a panel with three other professionals at the National Restaurant Show in Chicago in May. Her topic will be “Student Driven Trends in Campus Dining.” The show is one of the biggest trade shows in America each year and draws more than 100,000 people from all over the world.
Carol Lancaster, associate professor of finance, has served as president of the Virginia Chapter of Financial Executives International for 2005–06. FEI is one of the preeminent associations for financial executives, with approximately 15,000 members worldwide. Members hold high-level positions within the finance and accounting functions of public and private companies and universities. The organization provides cutting edge knowledge, networking opportunities and professional services to its members.
David Leary, University professor, has published an article on “The Missing Person in the Conversation: Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. and the Dialogical Self” in the inaugural issue of International Journal for Dialogical Science. This invited contribution discusses how Holmes, a mid-19th-century writer, social commentator and medical doctor, became a primary source of the I-Me distinction that William James introduced in his famous chapter on “The Consciousness of the Self,” which in turn became the source of many 20th-century treatments of the dialogical self. Leary also discussed his ongoing research on the influence of literature on psychology in an address co-sponsored by the Center for the Humanities and the departments of English, History, Philosophy and Psychology at the University of New Hampshire.
Sarah McComas, planned giving officer, has been elected president of the women’s board of the Virginia Home for Boys and Girls.
Lucretia McCulley, head, Outreach and Instruction Services, and Olivia Reinauer, social sciences librarian, will present “Connecting with AIM: The Search for a Virtual Reference Niche” at the 34th Annual LOEX (Library Instruction) Conference, May 4–6, in College Park, Md.
Thomas Poulin, adjunct faculty in SCS, presented two papers at the 2006 annual meetings of the Virginia Social Science Association. He presented “Property Rights and Disaster Preparedness: Balancing Private Development Rights with Public Goods in the Re-building of New Orleans,” and “Neighborhood Support to Homeland Security: Shifting Disaster Policy Models in the United States from 1789 to 2006.” Additionally, he was appointed to the VSSA board of directors.
James Rettig, University librarian, will receive the 2006 Alumnus of the Year award from the alumni association of the University of Wisconsin School of Library and Information Studies on May 14. The honor recognizes his career of outstanding contributions to librarianship and library services. The school will place a plaque honoring Rettig on its “We Graduate Leaders” wall.
Erling Sjovold, associate professor of art, was one of 14 artists out of 1,300 nominees to win a Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Space Award. The award provides free studio space in the TriBeCa area of New York City for one year. Sjovold will be able to use it during his sabbatical year, 2006–07. The award allows artists to accomplish concentrated studio work, be a part of the community of artists and make connections with other artists. The competition was juried by a panel of leading artists.
