Gathering for a march across campus on Martin Luther King Jr. Day are (from l.) Trenise Robinson, Stephanie Chandler, Danielle Torain, Courtney McRae, Brittany Gardner and Godfrey Plata. |
Students, faculty and staff marched across campus Jan. 16 to pack Cannon Memorial Chapel for a program honoring the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr.
"Overall, the program and march were both successful in achieving our goal of relaying the message of positive hope, inspiration and equality that characterized much of what Dr. King brought to the world during his lifetime," said senior Danielle Torain, chair of the organizing committee.
The large turnout pleased the committee, but, Torain said, "many of us would like to find ways of motivating an even greater number of students to come out to events like this in the future."
She said that Richmond has a "very strong and growing population of concerned, socially aware and positive individuals who do value diversity. ... I believe that the representation at this event showed that we are in fact moving in the right direction."
