Build It offers many options for faculty and staff involvement
Build It 2006 offers a wide variety of options for students, faculty and staff who want to engage with the greater Richmond community.
The University will grant staff up to eight hours of paid leave to participate in activities with Build It’s partner organizations on the Northside. Staff members are encouraged to find a “buddy” from another department with whom to volunteer, said Betsy Kelly, a Build It co-chair.
Collaborating with the University this year and next are two schools in Highland Park—Overby-Sheppard Elementary and Chandler Middle—that have ongoing needs. Opportunities include serving as classroom aides for reading, science or history; leading extended day activities; and mentoring.
Hotchkiss Community Center welcomes volunteers who can lead enrichment activities (computer training, cultural arts, sports teams, college prep, etc.) or serve dinner at the daily Kids Café. Volunteers with the Reach Out and Read program read to children at local pediatricians’ offices, collect books and organize waiting room bookshelves. Volunteers are also needed to assist with an April event.
Build It also is partnering with the student groups who host Spiderpalooza to bring Northside children to campus to participate in events on Westhampton Green April 22. Volunteers are needed for that event as well.
