Firm looking at recruiting, hiring and staff support
A consulting firm is helping the University determine if its human resources department is aligned with the goals and inclusive diversity objectives of the Common Ground Commission.
After spending nearly three months gathering data and information about Richmond's culture and processes, Mercer Human Resources will issue its report in the spring.
"The objective is to enable human resources to play a more strategic role within the University and to help us address the issue of inclusive diversity through more effective recruiting, hiring and staff support," said Herb Peterson, vice president for business and finance.
Mercer also will help the University develop consistent job descriptions, establish salary ranges for position categories, and establish and revise policies for evaluating and rewarding job performance. Both the 2004 Common Ground Commission and the 2005 Common Ground Action Committee recommended the project.
"Surveys conducted by Common Ground showed that many employees felt guidelines for position duties, salaries and annual reviews are not clear," said Peterson. "The Mercer study will help us improve our practices in these areas."
Representatives of Mercer have been conducting individual interviews and workshops with employees representing departments across the campus.
A steering committee will implement recommendations of the Mercer report. In addition to Peterson, others on the committee include Carolyn Martin, June Aprille, Daphne Burt, Len Goldberg, Dave Johnson, Jim Miller, Kathy Monday, Julie Tea and Christie D'Amour.
