55 students aid Gulf rebuilding during spring break

Six Bonner Scholars who spent their fall break helping victims of Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi were so moved by the experience that they organized a spring break trip and opened it up to the entire student body. Fifty-five students spent the week in Mississippi, participating in rebuilding efforts on the state's Gulf coast.

The students raised $30,000 to finance their trip. Money was donated from the University, community partners, families and friends of the students, said Sarah Potter, one of the fall break participants and an organizer of the spring break trip.

The students helped install drywall, replaced roofs and performed general construction tasks, Potter said.

"I really want people to know that the Gulf Coast still needs attention," said Potter.
