Outdoor speakers installed

The University successfully tested its newly installed campus-wide, outdoor emergency notification system in December. The system replaces the University’s tornado siren and will notify the campus community of any emergencies, including weather.

High-powered, 120-decibel speakers were installed in the bell tower of Boatwright Memorial Library and on the roof of Booker Hall, activated by a control panel at University Police headquarters. Tones and announcements will be heard anywhere outdoors on campus and in nearby neighborhoods.

The audible warning will consist of an alert tone, followed by a live or pre-recorded message. In an emergency, the cycle will repeat at least once followed by activation of UR Alert.

The audible component supplements UR Alert, which sends emergency messages by text message, e-mail and voice mail to individuals' computers and cell, work and home telephones. The University’s Web site and television channel also display emergency messages.

Additional warning speakers will be installed inside Tyler Haynes Commons, Boatwright Memorial Library, Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness, and the Heilman Center.
