Thomas C. Gutenberger, B'87Thomas C. Gutenberger, B'87, who has 20 years of successful development and alumni relations experience in higher education, will be the University's next vice president for advancement.
Gutenberger will manage Richmond's alumni relations, communications, community relations and development, as well as foundation, corporate and government relations.
He currently is vice president for college relations at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. At Union, he is leading the college's $200 million fundraising campaign, built an integrated external relations program and has been closely involved in the school's strategic planning process.
"Tom Gutenberger brings outstanding experience and talent to lead our advancement efforts," said President Edward Ayers. "Being a Richmond graduate, Tom possesses a deep understanding of and affinity for this University. This, combined with his broad experience, promises to make him exceptionally effective in his new role."

Gutenberger has served as vice president of college relations at Union since 1999 and is responsible for individual fundraising, corporate and government relations, alumni affairs, foundation relations, records and data systems, campaign management, communications, marketing, public relations and media relations.
He has been director of university development and campaign director at George Mason University, where he planned and implemented a $110 million campaign.
Gutenberger's previous experience includes serving as director of major gifts and director of development for the College of Education at San Diego State University. In addition, he held a number of progressively senior development positions at Cornell University.
In addition to his bachelor's degree in business administration from Richmond, he holds an M.B.A. from San Diego State University.
