Gift will fund colloquium
A $250,000 gift to the University from Dr. Henry Crimmel, philosophy professor emeritus from St. Lawrence University, will fund the Hays and Margaret Crimmel Colloquium on Liberal Education. Last spring faculty submitted proposals for organizing the first colloquium. Dr. Sydney Watts, associate professor of history, will serve as organizer of “The Frontiers of Liberal Education,” to be held in fall 2008.
University Police receives new accreditation
The University’s police department has received accreditation from the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA).
IACLEA announced the first five recipients of the organization’s accreditation at its annual conference in Las Vegas. George Washington University, University of Missouri at Columbia, University of North Texas and San Francisco State University also received the distinction.
Accreditation requires compliance with more than 200 standards of campus public safety.
The University’s police department also is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. It was the first private university law enforcement agency to earn accreditation by CALEA, in 1990.
Students win scholarships from journalism foundation
Richmond students Lauren Merkel and Dan Petty are winners of the 2007 Richmond SPJ,SDX Educational Foundation journalism scholarships.
The $2,000 merit scholarships are presented jointly each year by Society of Professional Journalists-Virginia Pro Chapter and the foundation to the top college journalists in the commonwealth.'
Merkel, ’08, from Plattsburgh, N.Y., is assistant news editor of The Collegian, where she has been on the staff since her freshman year. She is a journalism major and business and French double minor. Petty, ’09, from Pennington, N.J., a biology and journalism double major and French minor, is news editor of The Collegian.
Students win CPA society scholarships
University seniors Torisereju Mike and Jamie Raab, both of Richmond, and junior Will Kent of Chesterfield received scholarships from the Virginia Society of CPAs’ Educational Foundation.
Mike and Kent each received $1,500 minority awards, and Raab received a $1,500 undergraduate award. Candidates must have completed at least three credit hours and be enrolled in three additional hours of accounting, with a grade point average of at least 3.0 in the subject. Other selection criteria include overall academic performance, entry essay, faculty recommendations, and community and/or extracurricular activities.
‘Green’ glass sold at bookstore
The University Bookstore is carrying a line of environmentally friendly glassware created by The Green Glass Company of Wisconsin, owned by Christa Donohue, ’96. The glassware is made from discarded bottles. “By separating the bottle into two pieces, a tumbler is formed from the bottom portion of the bottle and a goblet from the top portion,” said Donohue. Revered throughout Europe as collectable art glass, the goblets have been used by King Carlos of Spain, a former New York City mayor, on movie sets and at celebrity dinners.
Dining Services wins two national awards
University Dining Services won the gold medal for medium-size colleges and the People’s Choice Award at the 2007 annual conference of the National Association of College and University Food Services.
The entry included a copy of the menu cycle, nutritional information, communication methods, balance options, menu specials and promotions. Entries were judged on balance, creativity, marketing, nutrition education and other criteria.
Conference attendees voted on the People’s Choice Award. Richmond won for best residence hall menu, which represents the best menu in the category from all colleges and universities submitting entries.
Richmond’s dining center underwent a $9.9 million renovation and expansion and reopened as a state-of-the-art food center in fall 2006.
Modlin Center is presenting sponsor of First Fridays Art Walk
The Modlin Center is presenting sponsor for the 2007–08 season of First Fridays Art Walk, a cultural event that showcases the city of Richmond’s arts community, focusing on the diverse arts and cultural venues located along the historic Broad Street corridor.
“We’re honored to become the presenting sponsor for the 7th season of Curated Cultures’ First Fridays Art Walk,” said Kathy Panoff, executive director of the Modlin Center. “We have long admired the remarkable work of this grassroots organization, whose vision and leadership have played a major role in the transformation and revitalization of downtown Richmond.”
Collaborations on First Fridays’ programming will be a central piece of the new relationship. For example, the University’s ensemble-in-residence, eighth blackbird, will give “Before First Fridays” and “After First Fridays” intimate concerts in Art6 Gallery Nov. 2.
Allies Institute taking applications
The Allies Institute (formerly known as Collegetown) is taking applications for participants. The institute is a four-day retreat filled with honest, no-holds-barred dialogue about tough issues such as ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, class and religion. Designed in collaboration with the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, the institute includes interactive workshops, intense small group discussions and experiential exercises designed to allow participants to think deeply about prejudice and discrimination. Participants strive to grow personally, build relationships across lines of difference and brainstorm ways to take action once they return to campus. This year’s institute will be held Jan. 8–11.
