Tell me about your position.
I am responsible for working with young graduate volunteers across the country, managing the five- and 10-year reunion classes, and getting students engaged in the University of Richmond Alumni Association.
What kinds of projects do you work on
to keep them connected?
We have been planning activities in major cities where our graduates have settled-Atlanta, Houston, New York and others—so that they can stay in touch with each other and with the University in their new surroundings. These are very informal gatherings held in locations that are popular for that age group.
We also have the student ambassadors program, which places current students who have been recognized for their leadership abilities at significant events, such as class reunions and homecoming, so that they can meet and talk with alumni. It gives the students a chance to see what life after Richmond is like, and shows the alumni some of the great things that students are doing here.
As a UR graduate yourself, why did you decide to stay and take this job?
I had worked at the Career Development Center as a student, and from that experience, I developed a real interest in working in higher education. Plus, like a lot of graduates, I was hesitant to leave—I love it here. So I interviewed for this job the day after graduation. I was so excited when I got it.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy working with people. I get to keep in touch with old friends as part of my work, which is great.
Where are you from originally?
I'm from Marietta, Ga., right outside of Atlanta. My dad was in the Army, so we lived in a few different places, but he retired when I was in middle school, and that's been my home ever since. I'm proud of my Southern roots.
Tell me about your family.
My parents still live in Marietta, and I have an older sister who just finished grad school. She's considering a move to Washington, so she may be living nearby soon. My parents are big University of Richmond fans and frequently field questions about the University from families at home.
What do you like to do in your
spare time?
I love to take pictures, especially floral, landscape and travel photography. I also like to entertain and plan fun activities to do with friends. I enjoy hosting dinner parties, being outside and taking weekend trips to visit friends.
