History course in motion

Civil Rights class

Students in the summer course, The Civil Rights Movement in the South, paused at the statue of James Meredith at the University of Mississippi in Oxford. Meredith was the first African-American to attend Old Miss under court-ordered integration in 1962. His enrollment led to riots on campus that killed two, injured dozens and eventually led President John Kennedy to send in federal troops and marshals. The students are (from l.) Kyle Storms, '08; Sarah Singletary, '09; Nathan Bullock, '10; Kellie Clark, '10; Ashlee Murphy, '10; Anna Dounce, '09; and Jill Eisenberg, '09. (Another student, Jocelyn Mabie, '08, is not pictured.) During the 19-day course, the class visited historic sites in nine states.
