Common Ground Corner

Common Ground coordinator hired

Following a long search process that began with 60 applications, the Office of Common Ground has hired Lisa Miles as the first coordinator of Common Ground. She joined the University on Feb. 26.

Miles holds an M.Ed. degree in higher education and student affairs administration from the University of Vermont, and she most recently was volunteer and internship coordinator for Chesterfield County.

Miles also brings to the Common Ground office extensive experience as a community organizer. Because of that, “she is well-positioned to help mobilize various campus constituencies toward Common Ground’s objectives,” said Glyn Hughes, director of Common Ground.

Staff, students and faculty who met Miles during her campus interview found her to be exceptionally thoughtful and approachable, said Hughes.

Spring discussion series continues

A spring discussion series, “In Common,” continues in Boatwright Memorial Library in March and April.

March 27: “Balancing Act: Caring for Your Aging Family Members” will feature an aging expert to lead a discussion of what kinds of resources and issues you need to know about as your family members age. The library’s collection of books, film, music and other resources can provide support and answers.

April 10: “What Happened before You Came to UR: Reading The Collegian Online” will outline what some of the key campus concerns were in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, such as when the University started discussing diversity, child care, gender roles, etc.
