Diversity training to be offered to orientation advisers

The University has received a $1,500 grant from the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) program for campus diversity leadership models.

Designed to increase awareness of diversity issues among staff and student leaders, the Richmond project includes a four-hour diversity training program that will be required of all student orientation advisers, who help new students make the transition to college.

The training program, created by Dan Fabian, interim dean of Richmond College, and Kerry Fankhauser, assistant dean of Westhampton College, will provide practical experience in developing advising and problem-solving skills.

Funds were provided to ACS by the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation of Atlanta. In addition to those funds, the University’s Common Ground Initiative has agreed to support the program. The National Conference for Community and Justice will conduct the training.
