University of Richmond responds to influenza-like illness cases with extended health center hours, flu hotline, other measures

September 4, 2009

University of Richmond’s Student Health Center reports that 42 students have been diagnosed with influenza-like illness (ILI) during the first two weeks of the fall semester. All either have recovered or are recuperating without any serious complications.

Doctors and nurses at the Student Health Center worked overtime this week to handle more than double the usual number of students requesting appointments. Most patients did not have flu. The health center, normally closed weekends, will open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. to see students who develop ILI symptoms.

University employees voluntarily staffed a toll-free hotline for students, parents, faculty and staff Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-11 p.m., providing information and assistance as needed. The light volume of calls—fewer than one per hour—indicated that information about prevention and treatment had reached most of the campus community.

Ill students are being accommodated with a liberal class absenteeism policy and the ability to make up course work without penalty. Those recuperating in their campus rooms are being provided with supplies, as well as receiving meals from the dining hall.

The university began advising the campus community of ILI contingencies before the fall semester began in letters to parents, e-mail messages to students, faculty and staff, and Web site updates.
