University of Richmond to Present Forum on Leadership and the Fiscal Future of the United States

September 22, 2005

The University of Richmond will host three national experts on fiscal policy in the United States, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m.-noon at the Jepson Alumni Center.

The program, “Leadership and the Fiscal Future of the United States,” is a non-partisan forum sponsored by the university’s Jepson School of Leadership Studies and the political science department, with cooperation and assistance from Centrists.org, the Concord Coalition, the Committee for Economic Development and the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

“One of the most significant challenges facing our country and our leaders is the nation’s long-term fiscal commitments,” said Kenneth P. Ruscio, dean of the Jepson School. “This forum, with some of the leading authorities on the federal budget and our rising national debt, will help us understand how we can fulfill our obligations to future generations.”

The discussion will feature David M. Walker, comptroller general of the United States, General Accountability Office. Walker, a frequent speaker and author, has had extensive executive level experience in both government and private industry.

Offering additional remarks and commentary will be Stuart Butler, vice president for domestic and policy studies, The Heritage Foundation; and Isabel V. Sawhill, vice president and director of economic studies, The Brookings Institution.

Butler has played a prominent role in the debate over Medicare, health care for working Americans as well as Social Security reform.

Sawhill co-directs the Welfare Reform and Beyond Initiative at Brookings and serves as president of The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. She is considered an expert on the federal budget, poverty and inequality and the social welfare policy. Both speakers have testified before Congress on these topics.

The presentation is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required. For further information, contact 289-6478. For parking information and maps, go to www.richmond.edu/jepson.
