University of Richmond to Host ABC-TV "Commander in Chief" Premier Party on Campus Sept. 27

September 14, 2005

University of Richmond, central to both the storyline and the production of ABC-TV’s new series “Commander in Chief,” is throwing a viewing party to celebrate the program’s debut Sept. 27 at 9 p.m.

Widescreen televisions will be set up on Westhampton Green with free popcorn and soft drinks. No tickets are required for the event, which is free and open to the campus community and local alumni. Audience members are asked to bring their own blankets.

A significant portion of the pilot episode was filmed at the university’s campus last spring--most of it indoors at Jepson Alumni Center and Tyler Hanes Commons. Academy Award-winner Geena Davis stars as the fictional Mackenzie Allen, a former University of Richmond chancellor elected vice president of the United States, who becomes the first female president when the incumbent dies in office. Donald Sutherland plays Nathan Templeton, speaker of the house, who opposes her.

The debut of “Commander in Chief” follows by nine days the Richmond premiere of the movie thriller “Cry Wolf,” which was also shot, in part, on the university’s campus.
