University of Richmond students to host 4th Relay for Life

October 6, 2009

University of Richmond students will host a 12-hour Relay for Life, a walk around Westhampton Lake to raise awareness and money for cancer research, Oct. 17 from 11 a.m.–11 p.m.

During more than 5,000 relays being held around the country, members of each community organize a daylong walk to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

Participants form teams and raise funds prior to the event. Each team must have one member walking at all times throughout the relay.

The university’s event will begin with a “survivor’s lap,” in which former cancer patients are honored as they complete a one-lap walk around the lake.

At 9 p.m. there will be a luminaria ceremony around the lake to remember loved ones lost to cancer. Luminarias can be ordered for a suggested $10 donation by visiting www.RelayForLife.org/UofRichmond or contacting Brian.Stellingwerf@richmond.edu.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information contact RelayForLife@richmond.edu or 804-527-3712.
