University of Richmond will host conference about China; 100 scholars will make presentations

The American Association for Chinese Studies (AACS) is holding its 49th annual conference at the University of Richmond, Oct. 5-7.
One hundred scholars from the United States and overseas will present papers at 30 panels, covering such issues as "Media in China and 2008 Olympics," "Ethnic Politics in China," "Women in China," "Foreign Influence in Chinese Art," "U.S.-China Relations" and "Elections and Democracy in Taiwan."
The conference will begin with a lecture Oct. 5 on "China's Political Future" by Susan Shirk, professor of political science, University of California, San Diego, and former deputy assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. Co-hosted by AACS and the World Affairs Council, her talk will be held at 3 p.m. in the Moot Court Room of Richmond School of Law.
Panel discussions get underway Oct. 6 at 8:30 a.m. in the Brown-Alley Room of Weinstein Hall.
