Biologist Sean Carroll to Present "The Making of the Fittest: The New Science of Evo-Devo" for Jepson Leadership Forum

October 9, 2006

Molecular biologist Sean Carroll, a pioneer in the rapidly-growing science of evolutionary development biology, will discuss Darwin, DNA and new discoveries as part of the Jepson Leadership Forum at the Science Museum of Virginia Oct. 10, 7-8:30 p.m.

Carroll studies how and when evolutionary changes occur by examining the genetic mechanisms that control the creation of structures in animal bodies.  He will talk about the common genetic toolkit for all animals and other recent advances in evolutionary developmental biology—“Evo-Devo.”  A challenger to the nonscientific ideas of intelligent design, he also stresses the importance of evolutionary biology in science curricula throughout the country.

Admission is free, but tickets are required to attend and may be purchased by calling the Modlin Center Box Office at (804) 289-8980.  The presentation will take place in the Thalhimer Pavilion at the Science Museum of Virginia on 2500 Broad Street.

Carroll earned a doctorate degree in immunology from Tufts University School of Medicine, is a principal investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and is a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

A book signing and reception will follow the lecture.  Books will be for sale at the event.
