University of Richmond's Center for Civic Engagement Receives 2005 Governor's Community Service and Volunteerism Award

October 14, 2005

University of Richmond’s Center for Civic Engagement has won a 2005 Governor’s Community Service and Volunteerism Award for its work to bring together campus and community members in collaborative study, reflection, and action to address contemporary social issues.

The center and 20 other individuals, companies and nonprofit agencies received their awards at an Oct. 6 ceremony at the Library of Virginia in Richmond.

Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, who was unable to attend, said the awards celebrate “the generosity of Virginians and their efforts to enhance the lives of their neighbors” and afford the opportunity to publicly thank them. “I encourage all Virginians to follow their example by becoming involved and providing service to their communities.”

Founded in 2004 as a major addition to the university’s educational enterprise, the center helps students connect their studies with service to the community and supports a variety of research projects and academically grounded internships working toward the improvement of social conditions in Richmond and the commonwealth.
