Sports, Society and Leadership Lecture Series Continues at University of Richmond
November 8, 2001
College sports and academics and the face of women athletes today are the topics in upcoming programs in the lecture series "Sports, Society and Leadership" at the University of Richmond.
James L. Shulman will discuss his new book "The Game of Life: College Sports and Educational Values" at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 12 in Jepson Alumni Center. His talk is free and open to the public.
Shulman will be followed on Nov. 19 by Jane Gottesman and Geoffrey Biddle, co-curators and creators of "Game Face," an exhibition currently on display at the Smithsonian.
Shulman's book looks at the role that sports have come to play in admissions at America's colleges and universities and the academic performance and values of college athletes.
Gottesman and Biddle will be the lead speakers of a program called "What Does a Female Athlete Look Like Today?" It begins at 4:30 p.m. in Jepson Alumni Center. Tickets are free but must be reserved by calling the Modlin Center for the Arts box office at 289-8980.
Joining Gottesman and Biddle will be Richmond athletic director Jim Miller; Donna Lopiano, executive director of the Women's Sports Foundation; Jaclyn Raveia, a national scholar athlete of the year who plays professional soccer; and women's professional basketball star Chamique Holdsclaw of the Washington Mystics.
People attending the program will receive free tickets to the Richmond-U.Va. women's basketball game at 7 p.m. that night.
The university's Jepson School of Leadership Studies sponsors the Jepson Leadership Forum annually.
