Former Bush, Clinton advisors to present panel discussion on "Foreign Policy and the Presidential Election" April 3 at University of Richmond

March 25, 2008

Two foreign policy experts who served in the Bush and Clinton administrations, and who have advised the major party presidential candidates, will discuss "Foreign Policy and the Presidential Election" April 3 at the University of Richmond.

Stephen Yates, former deputy national security advisor to Vice President Dick Cheney, and Derek Mitchell, a Defense Department official during the Clinton administration, will predict the impact of key foreign policy issues on the presidential race, outline the similarities and differences on national security among the candidates, review likely actions of John McCain and Barack Obama if either wins, and suggest who might rise to the new White House foreign policy team.

The panel discussion takes place at Jepson Hall, Room 118, at 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Vincent Wang, chairman of the university's political science department, at (804) 289-8533 or vwang@richmond.edu.

Yates is a senior fellow in Asian studies at the American Foreign Policy Council. Mitchell is senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Both are based in Washington.

The event is jointly sponsored by the University of Richmond Department of Political Science and the World Affairs Council of Greater Richmond.
