Recent Richmond Grad Named ODK National Leader of the Year
June 3, 2009
Rebecca Frazier, a 2009 graduate of the University of Richmond, has been named Omicron Delta Kappa's National Leader of the Year.
The Charlottesville, Va., resident graduated summa cum laude May 10, receiving her bachelor's degree in psychology with a double minor in leadership studies and women, gender and sexuality studies. Frazier served as 2008-09 president of the ODK Richmond chapter and also is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Golden Key International honor societies.
ODK is the national leadership honor society for college students. Each year, a student is selected from the 310 ODK college chapters as the national leader of the year, recognizing superior scholarship and leadership. The organization considers a member's work in scholarship, athletics, campus/community service, social/religious activities, campus government, journalism/mass media and creative/performing arts.
As a psychology department fellow at Richmond, Frazier designed a leadership training program for inner city girls and presented the program and an accompanying paper at the Southeastern Psychological Association annual conference last February. She made the dean's list all four years and participated in Richmond's University Scholars and Women Involved in Living and Learning programs.
Frazier helped initiate several programs in the local community and on campus. She organized ODK's first Angel Tree, providing gifts to more than 80 children in a local intensive care unit, organized a campus program to raise awareness about ODK's mission and members, and led one of the largest spring membership drives in the chapter's history.
"Thanks to Becca, we have a process that rewards students who have excelled in one or two activities in a more meaningful way, rather than rewarding many activities in a less meaningful way," said Steve Bisese, ODK national president and vice president of student development at Richmond.
Frazier plans to pursue a doctorate in psychology at the University of Virginia.
ODK was founded in1914 at Washington and Lee University as the first national college honor society and has initiated 300,000 members since.
