July 31, 2009

Michelle E. Wamsley, director of foundation and corporate relations for the University of Virginia Health System, has been named the University of Richmond’s assistant vice president of foundation, corporate and government relations. Her appointment is effective Sept. 16.

In more than a decade at Virginia, Wamsley provided direction for all health system foundation and corporate fundraising activity, led successful multimillion-dollar proposal teams and created a comprehensive giving program for the health system’s patients and friends constituencies. Prior to assuming her current role, Wamsley served the health system as director of development for individual giving, and from 1997 to 2000, she held both major gift and annual giving positions with Virginia’s College of Arts and Sciences.

“We are very excited to have Michelle join the University of Richmond. She brings with her excellent experience working with foundations and corporations as well as an overall strong background in fundraising in higher education,” said Tom Gutenberger, vice president of advancement.

At Richmond, Wamsley will oversee an office that has been responsible for securing more than $38 million in awards from foundations, corporations and government agencies in the past five years. She will work closely with faculty and deans to secure government grants and contracts and help identify appropriate funding sources for academic priorities.

“I’m delighted to join the University of Richmond’s advancement team during what is clearly a time of great institutional excitement. I look forward to translating this momentum into financial support to further advance the university’s mission,” said Wamsley.

Wamsley holds a B.A. in English from the University of New Hampshire and is pursuing a master’s of public administration from Virginia Tech. In addition to her professional responsibilities, she serves on the board of trustees of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Blue Ridge Chapter and chairs the donor development committee.
