University of Richmond board of trustees elects two new members, Judge Roger L. Gregory and Procter & Gamble executive Melanie Healey

July 8, 2009

University of Richmond's board of trustees has elected federal Judge Roger L. Gregory of Richmond and alumna-Procter & Gamble executive Melanie Liddle Healey of Cincinnati to four-year terms on the board.

Gregory was appointed to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals by former President Bill Clinton in December 2000, then renominated by former President George W. Bush and confirmed for a lifetime appointment by the Senate in 2001. He is the first African American to hold a seat on the 4th Circuit and the only judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals to be appointed by presidents of different political parties.

A Petersburg, Va., native, Gregory graduated summa cum laude from Virginia State University before earning his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School. He holds honorary degrees from Virginia Union, Virginia State, Virginia Commonwealth and Widener universities and taught constitutional law as an adjunct professor at Virginia State.  He is a past rector of Virginia Commonwealth's board of trustees and served on Virginia State's board of visitors.

He began his legal career with the Detroit law firm Butzel, Long, Gust, Klein & Van Zile, before becoming an associate with Hunton & Williams in Richmond. In 1982, he formed the law firm Wilder & Gregory with L. Douglas Wilder, becoming managing partner upon Wilder's election as governor of Virginia.

Healey is group president, global feminine and health care, of Procter & Gamble, the global consumer goods manufacturer that had $85 billion in sales in 2008. She previously served as the company's president of global feminine care and vice president of North America feminine care. She has been recognized in Fortune Magazine's "Top 50 Most Powerful Women in Business" and The Wall Street Journal's "Women to Watch."  Last year, the University of Richmond Alumni Association recognized Healey with its distinguished service award.

Born and raised in Brazil, Healey began her 25-year career in marketing at S.C. Johnson & Sons, later moving to Johnson & Johnson as group product manager in Brazil. She joined Procter & Gamble in 1990, holding a variety of marketing roles in Brazil and Mexico before being appointed general manager of feminine care in Latin America, based in Venezuela.

Healey earned her B.S. in business administration from the Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond. She served on the board of directors of the university's alumni association from July 2007-June 2009, when she stepped down to join the board of trustees.
