Accessibility map of the University of Richmond campus now available

August 28, 2009

University of Richmond students taking an Introduction to Geographic Information Systems class last fall and this past spring created a map of the campus for people with accessibility issues.

Working with portable GPS units, the students mapped the 350-acre campus noting all barriers – such as stairs, curbs and steep slopes – that are challenges for people who use wheelchairs and crutches. Current students and alumni who have mobility and accessibility issues spoke to the class about their personal challenges navigating campus to give the student researchers some perspective.

The map highlights more easily accessible routes and buildings, handicapped parking spaces and automatic doors.

The project was initiated by Lisa Miles, assistant director of the university’s Office of Common Ground. She asked Kim Klinker, director of the on-campus spatial analysis lab, to create a map for people with accessibility issues. Klinker developed the idea of making the map a class assignment and worked with the offices of Communications and University Facilities to complete the project.

Copies of the map are available through the university’s print shop and an online map will soon be available.
