October 10, 2008
David Burhans, chaplain emeritus of the University of Richmond, will receive the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities Humanitarian Award at the organization's 46th annual Richmond Chapter Humanitarian Awards dinner Oct 23.
Recipients are chosen for a creative achievement or significant contribution toward the improvement of social welfare and justice and a demonstrated commitment to respect individuals of diverse racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds. The center is a human relations organization that promotes inclusion and advances understanding through dialogue, experiential learning and education.
Burhans has served the university for 30 years as chaplain, special assistant to the Office of Advancement, member of the president's senior staff and a teacher in arts and sciences. He is a graduate of William Jewel College in Liberty, Mo., and received his doctoral degree at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
"Many people have dreamed and planned and partnered with me to identify and address issues/needs that can enhance, give hope to people who face injustice, conflict, rejection daily," said Burhans. "So many compassionate people look for ways to make a difference. I'm just one of large numbers of people who try to see, listen and respond."
