Free Family Fun Day to Mark Arts Center, Community Ed Anniversaries at University of Richmond

October 3, 2006

Performance groups, art exhibitions, children’s activities, demonstrations and an instrument “petting zoo” highlights a free family fun day celebrating the 10th anniversaries of University of Richmond departments on Oct. 7, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

The Modlin Center for the Arts and the Office of Community and Professional Education in the School of Continuing Studies, which both opened in 1996, will offer children’s face painting, clowns, balloon and chalk art, mask decorating and the opportunity to play different musical instruments.

A university student showcase will feature the improvisation group “Subject to Change,” an a cappella ensemble, Choeur du Roi, and the University Dancers.

Music professor Mike Davison will speak about the “Cuban Music Experience,” while other seminars and demonstrations will showcase cooking, children’s education and animal tricks and safety. Free chair massages will be available in the Modlin Center lobby.

In addition to free activities during the community event, “Dan Zanes and Friends” will perform in Camp Concert Hall at 11 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $12. The Department of Theater and Dance will also present Craig Lucas’ “Small Tragedy” at 7:30 p.m. in the Alice Jepson Theater. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students and can be purchased by calling the Modlin Center Box Office at (804) 289-8980.

The $22.5 million Modlin Center for the Arts attracts more than 100,000 people annually to its performing and visual arts events. The Office of Community and Professional Education enrolls thousands of continuing education students through partnerships throughout Virginia and the United States.

The event is sponsored by the Modlin Center for the Arts, the School of Continuing Studies and the Greater Richmond Alumni Chapter of the University of Richmond.
