National Leader in Environmental Justice Movement to Speak in WILL/WGSS/QUEST Speaker Series

October 6, 2006

Vernice Miller-Travis, a leader in the environmental justice movement, will speak at University of Richmond Oct. 25 as part of the 2006-07 WILL/WGSS speaker series.

Miller-Travis’s lecture, “A Woman’s Worth: Race, Gender and Class in the Environmental Justice Movement,” begins at 4 p.m. in the Whitehurst living room at Richmond College. Her speech is free and open to the public.

A leading figure in the national environmental justice movement, Miller-Travis is executive director of Groundwork USA, which helps communities impacted by brownfields and other derelict land issues improve their environment, economy and overall quality of life. A major focus of her work is engaging young people in the revitalization of their communities. At Richmond, Miller-Travis will explore the challenges working-class women of color face in addressing the environmental issues in their communities.

Miller-Travis’s talk is the second of six events in the series, sponsored by Richmond’s Women Involved in Living and Learning (WILL), Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) and Richmond Quest. The series’ theme is “Environmental Justice.” For more information, contact WILL at (804) 289-8578 or will@richmond.edu.
