Historical Jesus Scholar to Speak at University of Richmond

October 19, 2006

A leading historical Jesus scholar and author of the best-selling Jesus book in North America will deliver the 20th annual Weinstein-Rosenthal Lecture at University of Richmond’s Jepson Alumni Center Nov. 6 at 8 p.m.

Dr. Marcus J. Borg, author of “Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time,” will speak on “Jesus: From Jewish Mystic to Christian Lord.” Rather than being an apology for a Christian perspective, the lecture will present an understanding of Jesus that can serve as a bridge for Jews and Christians to understand their common ancestry.

The lecture is free and open to the public. A question-and-answer session, reception and book signing will follow.

Borg is Hundere Distinguished Professor in Religion in the Department of Philosophy at Oregon State University, where he has won numerous teaching awards and was the first person in the College of Liberal Arts to be designated “Distinguished Professor.”

As a historical Jesus scholar, he has published 11 books and numerous articles. A fellow of the Jesus Seminar, he has served as national chair of the historical Jesus section of the Society of Biblical Literature, co-chair of its international New Testament program committee and president of the Anglican Association of Biblical Scholars. His books have been translated into seven languages. His latest, published in 2006, is “Jesus: The Relevance of a Religious Revolutionary.”
