University of Richmond Bonner Scholars to Volunteer in Mississippi During Fall Break
October 12, 2005
Twenty-one University of Richmond Bonner Scholars will travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., Oct. 14–18 to help with relief efforts from Hurricane Katrina.
Bonner Scholars receive a partial scholarship each of their four years at the university and contribute 10 hours of community service each week during the academic year in the Richmond area. Additionally, each year the class of first-year Bonner Scholars takes a spring trip out of state, usually to West Virginia, to perform community service as a group. Since their trip was cancelled last year, this year’s sophomores asked if they could take their service trip in the fall and go to the hurricane-stricken region to offer assistance.
The students and two staff members will work with St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Hattiesburg, which is serving as a relief center for towns nearby. Students will help take in and distribute supplies and will assist in debris clean-up at the homes of elderly citizens in the area.
