Weinstein Family Announces Additional $1.5 Million in Gifts to New University of Richmond Recreation and Wellness Center
October 14, 2005
Marcus Weinstein, head of a family that already has donated $5 million to a new recreation and wellness center at University of Richmond, announced an additional $1.5 million in gifts toward the project during a ceremonial laying of the center’s cornerstone Sept. 29.
Speaking at the event, Weinstein delighted a crowd of around 300 students, faculty and staff by announcing he would give an additional $1 million, along with a gift of $500,000 from his business associate Jay Weinberg. The Weinstein and Weinberg families live in Richmond.
In recognition of the Weinstein and Weinberg families generous support of the university, the center’s exterior courtyard and peristyle will be named in honor of the Weinstein grandchildren, and the interior courtyard will be named in honor of Weinberg’s late wife Sondra E. Weinberg.
Weinstein and wife Carole, both University of Richmond alumni, joined daughter and university trustee Allison Weinstein and son-in-law Ivan Jecklin in making the $5 million lead gift last March.
The $13.5 million Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness is scheduled to open in January 2007 and will feature a state-of-the-art fitness center, an elevated track, a three-court gymnasium, casual meeting areas, locker rooms and instructional space.
